Blowing of The Pu

The blowing of the conch shell horn (Pū ) is an ancient Hawaiian custom that calls attention to the significance of the special occasion. The Pū is used to call for a gathering, to bless, and to announce your marriage.

Oli Aloha

The Hawaiian wedding ceremony traditionally starts with a chant called the Oli Aloha. The chant is meant to elevate and prepare the space and people to receive blessings. The chant also is a welcome greeting for the couple and their guests.

Lei Exchange

Leis, or flower garlands, are a symbol of love, respect, and Aloha spirit. The couple exchanging leis is a symbol of their love. “As you exchange these leis, you will begin to weave your lei in life together with love.” Grooms usually wear a garland of green maile leaves. Brides usually wear several pink and white pikake strands entwined with orchids or rosebuds. The bride might also wear a haku lei (headpiece of flowers and a green leaf braided). The couple usually presents their leis to one another with a smile and kiss upon each other’s cheek.

Mahalo iā 'oe

The Mahalo iā ‘oe translates into thank you. Couples present their parents with a lei to show respect and appreciation, a loving way to show gratitude for their support, dedication, and care. A lei is a common symbol of love, friendship, celebration, honor, or greeting. In other words, it is a symbol of Aloha. Those whose parents are passed can honor them by remembering and placing the leis on a chair.
