Historical Oahu
1922 — Oahu’s historic Honolulu Harbor waterfront became the Statue of Liberty of Hawaii — a beacon welcoming cruise ships and vessels to Honolulu, and the gateway to the islands for travelers from around the world.
During World War II, Oahu’s waterfront served as a defensive position, with landmarks painted in camouflage to be invisible at night.
1981 — The State of Hawaii began developing the land along Oahu’s downtown waterfront to benefit the state’s commercial trade and also to provide residents of Hawaii with ample access to the downtown waterfront.
2016 — Oahu truly captures the romance and beauty of old Hawaii. The Big Kahuna Luau plans to work with local partners and Hawaii Pacific University to restore the property and preserve its beauty for years to come.
Now home to The Big Kahuna Luau, visitors are able to enjoy a unique cultural experience while learning about the history of Honolulu. The perfect destination for weddings, community gatherings, and non-profit functions, The Big Kahuna Luau is pleased to host a variety of events amid the stunning beauty of Oahu’s historic district.
Exploring the Grounds
Royal palm trees guide the way along a cobblestone path which wanders through the fragrant mist of the ocean and tropical flowers. Art Deco paintings can be seen as a reminder of the shipping days of the 1920s and 1930s.
The tiki bar offers a selection of beer, wine, and tropical cocktails including our signature drink, the big Kahuna, to be enjoyed throughout the evening.
While exploring the grounds, you’ll find the Huli Huli pig a Hawaiian tradition at a luau feast.
Finally, perhaps the most charming feature of the property is a its amazing Hawaiian sunsets.
